Travel designed specifically for archaeology enthusiasts who want to explore the secrets of ancient Oman together with a professional archaeologist who will take you through the history of the ancient country of Magan. We will tell you the history as lived life of people that has been able to adapt to the hyper-arid climate by learning how to best use the resources available to develop a unique civilization.

DAY 2 MUSCAT, CAPITAL OF THE SULTANATE OF OMAN

A full day trip to admire the most interesting parts of the city: the great mosque built by his majesty the Sultan Qaboos; Wadi Aday, point of intersection of a series of different ecosystems that favored the development of the first communities in the 6th millennium BC, where you can easily go hunting for engravings as the walls of the wadi are literally covered with rock art; the National Museum which houses the most important collection of ethnographic objects and archaeological finds in the country; the ancient nucleus of the capital with the royal palace al Alam and the forts built by the Portuguese after the conquest of the city . A tour of the Mutrah Suq is a must, to explore the meanderings and have the opportunity to buy silver, fabrics, oriental fragrances and spices.

DAY 3 OASIS AND SITES OF THE BRONZE AGE IN THE DAKHILYA REGION

 

After breakfast we will head to the oasis of Nakhal through the plantations of dates, where the characteristic Falaj flow, ancient water engineering works that are still used to irrigate the oases. We will move to Rustaq to see the fort of Hazm, built in 1711 with walls about 3 meters thick. We will then visit the funeral structures of Bath, dating back to the third millennium (BC) and the archaeological complex at the foot of the mountain (UNESCO site). We will arrive in the village of Misfat Arbaiyyin built in raw clay on the side of the mountain and stay in a traditional house used as a bed and breakfast.

DAY 4 HISTORY AND TRADITIONS


We will leave from the ancient village of Misfat Arbaiyyin to go and see the great boulder of Hasat bin Salt with its fascinating rock carvings. Later we will visit the fortress of the Iron Age of Salut and then discover the secrets of the imposing castle of Jabreen. We will then go to Nizwa, the ancient capital of Oman, where we will spend the afternoon between visiting the old town and the traditional Suq.

DAY 5 TRANSFER TO SALALAH AND CITY TOUR
 

In the morning we will go to the Muscat airport for the transfer to Salalah. In the afternoon we will visit the highlights of the Sultan's birthplace: at Al Baleed (UNESCO Site), we will make the complete tour of the archaeological site with an electric vehicle; Museum of Incense, two rooms, in one collected the nautical instruments and models of ships that have made Oman a nation of navigators and another where they are exposed the testimonies of the history of the country, from archaeological finds found in the excavations to ancient texts. We will cross the band of banana and coconut plantations, we will stop at the tomb of the first king of Kerala converted to Islam and end the day with a tour to the souk of incense, where you can know and buy all the qualities of incense and perfumes of Arabia.

DAY 6 THE GREAT DESERT OF THE RUB AL KHALI
 

Excursion in the great Rub al Khali desert along the incense route: Wadi Dowka (UNESCO site), where grow the sacred Boswellia trees that produce the precious resin; Shisr (UNESCO site) archaeological site, interpreted as the ancient city of Ubar. We will reach the great dunes of Malhait on track, where we will wait for the suggestive sunset that can be seen in this corner of the world; we will reach the tented camp where we will be welcomed with tea and dates and we will be able to sit around the fire telling stories and legends about these sands.

DAY 7 CANYON IN THE NEJD PLATEAU AND RETURN TO SALALAH


After breakfast, we will go back on track to continue our exploration of the Nejd, a pre-desertic plateau furrowed by Pleistocene streams that hosts numerous archaeological sites from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age. We will see numerous triliths: mysterious alignments of stones dated to the first century. We will stop at the natural spring of the village of Mudhay and continue on the track, until we reach the coast road along the cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean.

DAY 8 JABAL SAMHAN SAFARI

 

Excursion on the mountain of the Jabal Samhan: fort of Taqa, the ancient dwelling of the wali, we will see from its inside a local abode with its uses and customs; Khor Rori, a charming natural harbor at the mouth of Wadi Dharbat and the ancient port city of Sumharram; the mountain villages; two of the biggest sink holes in the world; Wadi Hinna where the spectacular baobab trees grow. We will continue to Mirbat, to see the port where fishing dhow is still used today.
