A full day trip to admire the most interesting parts of the city: the great mosque built by his majesty the Sultan Qaboos; Wadi Aday, point of intersection of a series of different ecosystems that favored the development of the first communities in the 6th millennium BC, where you can easily go hunting for engravings as the walls of the wadi are literally covered with rock art; the National Museum which houses the most important collection of ethnographic objects and archaeological finds in the country; the ancient nucleus of the capital with the royal palace al Alam and the forts built by the Portuguese after the conquest of the city . A tour of the Mutrah Suq is a must, to explore the meanderings and have the opportunity to buy silver, fabrics, oriental fragrances and spices.

DAY 3 SHENAH

To reach the village of Shenah we will leave the hotel after an early breakfast. In this area, the rock art is located on bedrock surfaces and on boulders that are often in a secondary position. Most of the figures are engraved in a deeply hammered and chiseled technique. It is also quite easy to observe several repeated superimpositions that suggest the presence of different phases. Animals shown with the body completely filled with pecked incisions on the inside represent the first phase and the animals with the outline drawn with three lines, dated to the 4th millennium B.C.E. always overlap them. These three strokes animals are very likely to be representations of ibexes or wild goats, oryx, Arabian gazelle and thar, as in the logo of Dhofar International Tourism. In the afternoon we will reach the town of Nizwa, the ancient capital where we can admire its imposing fort. We will visit the souk where you can still find some ancient silver jewelry.

DAY 4 HASAT BIN SALT

After an early breakfast we will leave the hotel to visit the most famous rock art monument in Oman: Hasat bin Salt. The boulder is a monolith geologically considered an “exotic”: this is the term used to indicate the fragments of metamorphosed limestone in contrast with the other surrounding rocks that are igneous.  Hasat bin Salt has three different panels on its vertical faces, one on each side of the large boulder facing north, west and south where you find groups of human figures created with a sort of statuary technique. Later we will visit the Saiq Plateau, a large portion of the oceanic crust that emerged from the bottom of the Tethys Sea bringing millions of fossilized sea creatures dated to the Mesozoic. On the way back we will stop at the ancient village of Birkat al Mouz to stroll among the ancient falaj and mud brick houses.

DAY 5 WADI AL HAREEM

On the way to Wadi Al-Hareem we will go to see the impressive beehives tombs of Al Ayn, dated to the 3rd millennium B.C.E. The tombs are standing on top of the cliff in order to watch and protect the village on the banks of the wadi. After a panoramic drive around the mountain of Jabal Shams we will reach Wadi Al-Hareem (the “Wadi of the Women”). Unlike wadis in other areas where the engravings are found on the rock walls, those of the Wadi Al-Hareem have petroglyphs engraved on several boulders which in the past have been smoothed by the waters. These boulders emerge from the side of the slope that incorporates them into the hard soil conglomerate. One stone block is completely engraved with representations of riders on mules, which are not found elsewhere in Oman

DAY 6 WADI SAHTAN

We will spend the full day in Wadi Sahtan which is one of the most significant wadis for the presence of rock art in the northern Hajar mountains. After reaching Al-Khadra, at the beginning of the palm tree cultivation we will leave the car and go into the wadi on foot. These rocky walls are covered by hundreds of rock engravings depicting Arabic inscriptions, horse and camel riders, outlined in a schematic or naturalistic style, sometimes associated with warriors. We will then drive to a site called Gore Anaqsah where we will find two long rocky wall panels, which are fully engraved.  We can see the most ancient human figures discovered in the wadi: Women standing or sitting on thrones, because of their quite large dimensions and vertical position on the wall it is probable that these ladies are representing the princesses ruling the area at that time.

DAY 7 WADI BANI KHAROUS

We will leave our guest house early in the morning to reach Wadi Bani Kharous before the sun is high in the sky. Here you will visit four different sites where we will be able to view some very interesting animal figures (lions, horses, leopards and cobras). Additionally, you will also see figures overlapping those of ibexes that were engraved millennia earlier. These figures are dated from the 5th to 4th millennium BC, but they are not the oldest figures of these rocks. In fact, these animals overlap a circular figure placed in the center of the right portion of the depression. It is, in all probability, a green turtle: you can see the anatomical details of the head and some legs.  In the afternoon we will drive back to Muscat
