DAY 1 ARRIVAL IN SALALAH AND CITY TOUR


Welcome to Salalah, the second largest city in Oman. You will be welcomed at the airport and transfer to the selected hotel for check-in. In the afternoon our specialized guide will take you to see the highlights of the city: the great mosque; the incense museum of Al Baleed (UNESCO site), where the main testimonies of the history of the country are preserved. We will end with a walk through the alleys of the incense souk, where you can appreciate the many qualities of the precious resin. Return to the hotel for a short lecture on the great desert and the many things you will see.

DAY 2 THE DESERT GATE / MUQSHIN 


After breakfast we will hit the road that takes to the desert. We will stop at Wadi Dowka (UNESCO site), to see the largest concentration of Boswellia sacra trees, the plant that produces the frankincense resin. We will proceed to the village of Muqshin where we will be welcomed in a traditional house for lunch. In the afternoon we will say goodbye to asphalt road and will go to visit the isba, a temporary camp where special race camels are kept.  Here we can experience a short camel ride in the desert. After a most spectacular sunset on top of the dunes we will reach a Bedouin camp where we will enjoy a traditional Arabian night in the desert.

DAY 3 MONTASAR / THE PLACE WHERE BIRDS REST

 

By following the golden sand of the dunes we'll reach the oasis of Al Montasar. The oasis grows around a spring of hot water where many migratory birds stop for a rest. We will enjoy the experience of real Bedouins sitting under an acacia tree and watching the camels graze in the oasis in the middle of the desert. In the afternoon we will drive northeast to reach the Bedouin camp of Al Mashash. Here we will rest by the highest dunes of the desert and enjoy the starry sky.

DAY 4 BORKANA

 

Today we will drive across the desert to arrive at one ancient lake bed, now dry, where a spring of water survives in the driest environment on the planet. Here we will stay for the night in a mobile camp around a fire. Hundreds of kilometers away from any form of civilization we will look for ourselves.

DAY 5 THE SEARCH FOR WATER


On the path of ancient Bedouins, we will trust our guide to search for the nearest spring among the dunes. Crossing Wadi Bin Khawtar we will reach one more stunning source of water where we will set our camp and spend the evening cooking over our camp fire and listening to stories and legends.

DAY 6 DAWKAH AND ASH SHISR
 

Today we will drive through Dawkah to Ash Shisr.  We’ll visit Shisr archaeological site (UNESCO site), interpreted as the ancient city of Ubar. We will reach the great dunes of Al Khadaf, where we will wait for the suggestive sunset that can be seen in this corner of the world; we will reach the Bedouin camp where we will be welcomed with tea and dates and we will be able to sit around the fire telling stories and legends about the lost city of Ubar.

DAY 7 CANYON IN THE NEJD PLATEAU AND RETURN TO SALALAH


After breakfast, we will go back on track to continue our exploration of the Nejd, a pre-desertic plateau furrowed by Pleistocene streams that hosts numerous archaeological sites from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age. We will see numerous triliths: mysterious alignments of stones dated to the first century. We will stop at the natural spring of the village of Mudhay and continue on the track, until we reach the coast road along the cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean.
