Gold, frankincense and myrrh, as we all know these are the gifts the three wise men brought for the newborn Jesus. Everyone knows what gold is, but not everyone knows the precious resins of incense and myrrh. This trip was designed to get to know the plants that produce the best quality incense, learn the techniques of harvesting and explore the ancient tracks of the caravan that from Dhofar brought the precious goods throughout the ancient world.

DAY 1 ARRIVAL IN SALALAH 

 

Welcome to Salalah, the second largest city in Oman. You will be welcomed at the airport and transfer to the selected hotel for check-in.

DAY 2 SHINING SALALAH
 

 

Tour of the highlights of the city: the great mosque; the incense museum of Al Baleed (UNESCO site), where the main testimonies of the history of the country are preserved. We will end with a walk through the alleys of the incense souk, where you can appreciate the many qualities of the precious resin.

DAY 3 JABAL AL QARA / THE HEART OF FRANKINCENSE PRODUCTION


We will drive through the mountain of Jebel al Qara to reach the northern slope, the area where the best quality of Frankincense is harvested. Visit the archaeological ruins of Andhur and the bronze age site of Hagif. Visit the mausoleum of Prophet Hud. In the evening we will reach our camp among Boswellia sacra, the frankincense tree.

DAY 4 THE SECRETS OF FRANKINCENSE


Today we discover all the secrets of the sacred resin. We will meet with a local expert on the ancient craft of harvesting frankincense and we’ll experience firsthand cutting, cropping and drying of frankincense. Our specialized guide will be with you to disclose the magical and medical of Boswellia sacra. You will be able to participate the full production process and bring home your own handpicked frankincense.

DAY 5 THE GREAT DESERT OF THE RUB AL KHALI
 

Excursion in the great Rub al Khali desert along the incense route: Wadi Dowka (UNESCO site), where is the largest collection of frankincense trees; we’ll visit Shisr (UNESCO site) archaeological site, interpreted as the ancient city of Ubar. We will reach the great dunes of Malhait on track, where we will wait for the suggestive sunset that can be seen in this corner of the world; we will reach the tented camp where we will be welcomed with tea and dates and we will be able to sit around the fire telling stories and legends about these sands.

DAY 6 CANYON IN THE NEJD PLATEAU AND RETURN TO SALALAH


After breakfast, we will go back on track to continue our exploration of the Nejd, a pre-desertic plateau furrowed by Pleistocene streams that hosts numerous archaeological sites from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age. We will see numerous triliths: mysterious alignments of stones dated to the first century. We will stop at the natural spring of the village of Mudhay and continue on the track, until we reach the coast road along the cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean.

DAY 7 JABAL SAMHAN SAFARI

 

Excursion on the mountain of the Jabal Samhan: we will visit the fort of Taqa, ancient dwelling of the wali, we will see from its inside a local abode with its uses and customs; the UNESCO site of Khor Rori, a charming natural harbor at the mouth of Wadi Dharbat and the ancient port city of Sumharram; the mountain villages; two of the biggest sink holes in the world; Wadi Hinna where the spectacular baobab trees grow. We will continue to Mirbat, to see the port where fishing dhow is still used today.
